allen bolts??

I am removing a transmission on a 1968 230/250 6 cyl gas auto. I have run across two allen screws holding the starter. These are larger than the sizes I have. I find myself needing to buy the tool. Would anyone know what size I will need. I believe it maybe metric. Thanks Mike

I have no knowledge of you car in particular, but yes, I'm 99% sure they are metric. My advice to you is to purchase a set of allen wrench ends that attach to a 3/8" rachet end. These are lovingly called 'Dick Sticks' by my father, but they are damned useful and much more better than fiddling with individual allen wrenches. If you're planning to do any of your own work, I would highly reccomend you purchase a set, mine are used almost every time I work on my car.

Most of the tranny bolts take an 8mm hex, the starter ones take a 10mm hex.

Dan is right, get a set.

I have a set of allen head sockets up to 10mm that get used almost every time I work on the car. Next oil change I am going to replace the oil level sender (and pump chain while I'm there-anything else?) and that oil sump pan has about 20 allen head bolts.
