Africa:

Did you ever drive the car with the selector lever in "L"? And then shift to 2 (or "S"), and then shift to 3 (or"D"). How many shifts total?

The center band of the three is B1, and is applied only in "L".

What is the final drive ratio? Stamped into the aft face of the main casting of the differential, on the lower right corner (usually; occasionally found on the lower left).

HI Frank

yes I did drive it from L, S, D.

if I remember it was 2 shifts.

In any case with the separation of the band material, is this transmission is toast ?, or are you indicating that the transmission can still be used like this?

I do have anther transmission and will change it.

What should I look out for and pre insect before installing the replacement transmission.

thanks a lot for your time and suggestions.

Yep that brake band looks like it is dead.

If you continue to use the transmission you'll end up scoring the brake band drum. This ends up contaminating the transmission fluid with swarf which then gets sent everywhere - it increases heat within the transmission - eventually the braking effect will no longer work.

{Imagine trying to stop a speeding vehicle with no friction material on the brakes}

1) If two shifts occurred, then the three available ratios (out of four) engaged normally.

2) Which band are you speaking of? The front band is B3, and is applied only in reverse. The middle band is B1, and is applied only in "L" (actually 2nd gear). The rear band is B2, and is applied in "L", & "S" (actually 2nd & 3rd gears). I may be missing something, but in the picture, I do not see any band lining out of place. All bands are off in "D" (4th gear), and clutches K1 & K2 are applied.

3) The question of the final drive ratio was raised because the reported engine speeds seem high for the road speeds.

Stretch:

As I said, I may be missing something, but I saw that spot, and concluded that it was a dirty ATF spot, rather than friction material.

Could be - there's only one guy with sharp enough finger nails for this job - and it isn't either of us!
