C36 Overheating, both Benzes down...
Yesterday my 190E 2.6 quit while I was cruising. No warning, no noise, engine just died and cannot be re-started anymore. Gonna have it towed to the shop.
Today my 1995 C36's temp reached 115 degrees C! Investigation revealed Auxillary fans were not working and fuse is 31 blown. This supplies power to the Auxillary Fan Relay. I replaced the fuse but it kept on blowing, indicating a fault somewhere. Does anybody know where the Aux Fan relay is? What are probable causes of the fuse blowing? I cannot use the car if the Aux fans are not working because it is the height of summer here and the ambient temps are REALLY REALLY HIGH. I cannot drive it to the shop because it will overheat in the traffic for sure. I applied +12 volts directly to the resistor in front of the fans and they both ran smoothly. PLEASE HELP!!

Bong, have a quick look, is the revcounter working?
When the cooling fan kept blowing fuses in my 190, the rev counter used to stop as well, it turned out that the switch that activates the fan was broken, causing the fuses to keep blowing when it tried to activate. The same fuse controlled the rev counter as well.

Hi Matt. Yes the Tach is working. I found the relay - it was hidden under a plastic cover at the back of the fuse box.
The Aux fan relay is fine so i am inclined to suspect the other loads on the same circuit (ckt #31): Back-up light and/or heaters. Anybody got any ideas on how to troubleshoot these loads? Thanks

I would try unplugging the offending parts of the circuit and seeing if the fuse blowing goes away. If not, I would leave the fans on with your set up to check it out (running power directly to the fans from the battery) with an in-line fuse of the rating in your fuse box for this circuit, and take it to the shop to have it fixed. Sounds like a wire has been scuffed or abraded and now is shorted to the car frame somewhere. With a multimeter and some patience you can probably take care of the issue by identifying the circuits and testing them to see if they are shorted. Good Luck, Jim
