Front Rotors 95 124

Hello,

95 E320 Coupe 180k. I am about to change out the rotors on the old girl and I am getting mixed information regarding the procedure. Are the 95's rotors bolted or locked pinned onto the hub. My research has shown having to remove bearing hub yet the good folks at Peilcan offer a video showing the removal of simple retaining stubs that can be bashed out with an awl. Any info would be greatly appreciated as she is already on the blocks with parts in hand.

Thanks and happy motoring.

all W124 model benz front rotors are held on the hub with a small allen screw which is between two lug bolt holes. After removing the caliper, you just unscrew that screw and remove the rotor, if its stuck you will need to hammer it off.

Rear vs Front

Thanks very much for the reply. The rear ones are very much that simple but the fronts are in fact more complex than that. There are retainers to the axle hub that are either bolts or forcible expansion inserts.
Regards

They just help locate the rotor to the hub, they don't hold it at all. It is really just as easy as the rears.

benzometer, as mentioned the allen head set screw holds the rotors in place. You may want to spray some PB Blaster where the rotor fits the hub. Screw in 1 lug bolt a few threads if you need to use a dead blow hammer to loosen the rotor, so the rotor doesn't fly off when it releases suddenly.

You are talking about the "roll pins" mentioned in this article? Pelican Technical Article - Mercedes-Benz W124 - Front Brake Rotor Replacement

They are only for locating, and don't require removal. Just remove the allen screw.

Thanks very much to you all. I based my bewilderment on a question posted on the net regarding this procedure. It may be that later 124's were reconfigured,
but it did generate several responses that proclaimed the removal of the hub. Upon looking at my ride in preparation of the job at hand, the existing rotor made me believe that the dust cap on the bearings would at least need to be removed. In any case, I am off to the task.

Cheers and the Best to everyone.
Thanks

In and out in 20minutes, the '95s are a cinch.

benzometer, no need to touch the dust cap for the wheel bearings. There is the possibility that you will cause more problems by doing that. Consider buying a Haynes Manual or the MB E-Class Owner's Bible which address basic maintenance topics.

IMO the "E-Class Owner's Bible" has too many flaws to be worth buying, buy the FSM or Haynes.

The E class "bible" is great if you consider it as a mostly correct informational book about the W124. It is by no means a service manual. That is available on line if you search for it.

Thanks

Mission accomplished. She has new rotors/pads on all fours. The E Class Bible is in fact a waste of money. I have used mine to support an old television in my garage roughly ten years ago. It is free for the asking. Bentley has published some great manuals but this is certainly not one of them.

Thanks again folks.
Highest regards,
Bill
