The fuel pump on my 1987 300SL buzzes constantly. I'd rather not buy a new one if there's something I can do. Can these pumps be stripped and repaired/cleaned to overcome this problem?

Thanks.

Once the fuel pump is noisy it stays noisy, unless it's noisy because the filter is "stopped up" restricting the fuel flow. Since your car is 12 years old probaly the best thing to do is replace both pump & filter.

Once they get noisy, you're ridding on borrowed time. Get it replaced soon!

Benzmac and M.B.Doc, I know this is old but searching your old notes helps me. Could this fuel pump noise make a strong hissing sound like an air hose on an air compressor? I've got that sound under my 1989 300E.

Yes, that is the noise! New ones sometimes are a little noisy too, but they don't growl. The ones that are on their way out do growl.

I am a little confused, I have a hissing sound from the rear of the car which is a 1986 420 SEL and I am 99.9% sure it is the fuel pump. I have been told the hissing sound is normal, is that true ?

John r, check out the discussions in the folder "Benzmac, since Your the Man, settle this".

Those discussions have some great info that could help answer your question here.
