I have a 1971 model 250 sedan and need to replace the starter. Unfortunately, the upper mounting bolt is hidden in a maze of plumbing, bell housing, manifold, etc. and is utterly inaccessible.

I have an old aftermarket maintenance book which cryptically states that "in some models the upper bolt is inaccessible, and can only be reached from the inside of the car, through the access panel, with a long extension, swivel, and socket". Unfortunately, they give no hint about where that panel might be (or how long that extension might be). I have removed all the carpets and floor pads on the passenger side and can't find a panel anywhere, nor can I spot one from the underside.

Does anyone know where this mysterious access panel is, or any other tricks for getting the starter out of there short of demolition?

Thanks

On the model car you have there isn't any special access that you can remove to get to the upper bolt. What you need is flex 10mm allen socket & long extension to get the bolt loose.

Be carefull! If you round out the allen bolt it is hell to get out. Be sure the inside of the head of the bolt is completly clean and dry before inserting the above tool.

Oh, man... I didn't even realize it was an Allen head bolt (since it is invisible). Sounds like my next call needs to be to my friendly Benz mechanic.

Thanks
