Exclamation Mercedes 190e AFM help-2.3-16

Hello all,

I am going to give you a run down of my experience with this 1987 190e 2.3-16.

This is a learning experience for me, so I am just blowing and going on this one.

I began work on a very poorly running 190e 2.3-16 and it had issues with bogging down, low on power, and rough idle. So I naturally did what any person should do and rebuilt the fuel distributor. This rebuild went very well and I followed a CIS-E rebuild guide to the tee. It went great! I was very pleased with everything.

From there I reinstalled the fuel distributor and found that I still had a lot of resistance in the afm air plate and it would not return to top position. The piston in the distributor moves freely and returns to position freely and without any crunch or resistance. Now the afm on the other hand when operated by hand free of the fuel distributor has a very rough operation and gets snagged before it returns to top position. The overall operation of the afm is poor and I blamed the poor running of the car on this.

So I then began to tear into the afm and tried to clean it to the best of my abilities. Although I have experience with the fuel distributors I do not have any with the afm operations yet I tore into it anyway. So I unscrewed the retainers for the plate the secures the arm to the rod that pivots. This mistake made me loose my position on the rod and thus threw the adjustment of the potentiometer off. This is where it went downhill... In attempts to mend this I tore into the pot on the side and to align the brushes on the arm with the rod and with the air plate assembly. I am certain that this whole assembly is thrown off now by my efforts. However I did get everything back together.

I put everything back together and used my best judgement to guess a relative position of the brushes, rod, arm-air plate, and the potentiometer. This is a wild card.

I reinstalled everything and started the car which to my amazement actually started, but I suspect that was the cold start. Then my ****ery continues and I notice that the air fuel mixture tower is broken and I mess with that. After I mess with this part the car will no longer start or run.

So much fun right?

So gents, do you believe this is a repairable situation and if so may you please lend your judgement. I have little to no experience with these engines. I come from the land of diesel 300's.

Thanks!
