cup holders???why not??
 

i have a '95s500 sedan and cannot beleive it does not come with any holders whatsoever!does anybody know why?i've read about aftermarket holders in ads but i don't know what they'd be like.any help???

Germans don't understand our obsession with cupholders. It took them along time to put them in their cars, destine for our shores. You have to remember that most cars in Europe are stick shifts. Managing shifting and a drink, especially coffee, is not easy or safe. Also, in Germany they have very strick rules for driving. Even in the U.S., if should you get into an accident and they find that you were trying donw a Big Mac at the time, you would be at or partially at fault for not paying attentione to the road. Most Americans "live" in their cars while being stuck in rush hour traffic, so "we" feel we need to have every household convience in our cars. Our Passat has cupholders, but they get rarely used. I will not install any type of aftermarket cupholders in the Benzes. There are outfits that sell single cup holders that get screwed into your door panel. Also there is the type that fit under the center armrest. Go to www.************************ and you can find them there. They are very expensive, for just a cupholder, but they color match your interior.

l have noticed the same with my 93 sel500....unbelievable. l carry a cup holder which sits on the driver side floor!!!!...ridiculous.

Wonder if later models have any??:confused: :mad:

A German saying "You have no steering wheel on your coffee table. Why would you have a cupholder in your car?

They are a little pricey, but are very well made. I have a 1977 300D and got one that fit's in the center console, under the armrest. They even made a "custom" one for me that has the Zebrano wood finish.

Rickjordan is exactly right........drink holders are a necessity, especially with a 1 hour each way commute on Route 80 in NJ......gotta have the coffee.

Actually what would come in handy is an automotive "porta potty" for when you are stalled in traffic for a couple of hours. I hate to re-use the cup I just emptied.

My car has cheap cup holders... its located on the inner part of the glove compartment door. There are 2 small cup holders, but they are not really that good when you do turns. They could have made it better in my oppinion

The later cars have a tyypical German solution to the cupholder issue. Following another German saying, "Why make something simple when it is easy to make it complicated?" the new cars cupholders are a mechanical design that, when activated, come out of a covered area on the center console. You push the cover down, I believe (I have only used the things for their entertainment value), and they spring to life. The cover moves out of the way, and the cupholder set up kind of extends and unfolds. One is a simple device the other is an adjustable set of mechanical claws that adapts to the size of your cup. When not in use they are fully covered up and not visible.

The previous owner of my E300D TurboDiesel must have used it quite a bit as it was malfuntioning (would open on its own and then not stay shut) and was replaced under warranty. No little part changes, the whole mechanism and the wood cover were replaced as a unit.

Try collecting some of the airsickness bags on your next flight. I found they just barely have the capacity needed after drinking a few beers in the airport lounge before boarding a potty-less commuter flight to Providence one night. The flight was delayed a few hours, so after some pain and discomfort, a creative solution to the problem was discovered....

I guess a stop at the side of the road and a quick search for a tree or some other suitable target would be better than prompting the engineers at MB to come up with some built in mechanical solution. Judging on the cupholder solution, and the failure mode I experienced with that, I would be quite concerned about a random activation and the potential consequences. Jim

Using the cup never works out that well. I'll try the bags.

Funny thing about the cup, after drinking a 16oz cup of coffee, I always need a 24 oz cup for draining.

Go figure.

I also bought them from www.drinkholders.com (also www.cupholders.com). I bought a vinyl colored one for the pasenger door and the burl wood for the center console. The door unit has self tapping screws and should be put where they recommend for it to go to ensure the screws gain good purchase on the fiberboard in the door.

The console unit (which I put there to be close at hand), has a self adhesive. I cut out the carpet and inset it, adhering it to the platic below the carpet.

Be sure and check that your armrest can still go down in the chosen location (if you care to use it while drinking).

oh, and they work fine. They probably don't hold those ginat cups, but they work well enough for my 14oz. insulated coffee mug.

The only one that mine won't hold are the 44 oz cups. Mine sits on the console and it hold's as big a cup as I ever need to drink.

At least the ML has plenty of cup holders!

That's our weekend and trip vehicle, so it's a necessity in that respect.

I don't like the idea of drilling holes to accept an accessory cup holder, so when I'm in the W124, I just lift the armrest put the cup in the center console, and slide the cover to hold it in place.

No drinking in the SL though...:(

There used to be a product available called the "Motorman's Friend" for those long drives.

When I was a kid, dad used to carry a milk bottle in the old Rambler for us boys.

When I was in Australia, I used to have a McDonald's cupholder that hooks itself onto the window edges.

Personally, I don't quite like cupholders in any cars even when I had one that came with it.

The exception is when I'm chauffered sitting at the rear with a bottle chiller and a designed folder for putting the Crystal flute glass as we enjoy the hillside view .... :D

I was looking at the newer E320 wagons and they have cup holders for the thrid seat rear passengers. They fold up when not in use.

They can be fitted to doors of almost any car. I believe they cost about $35.
