What should someone consider to be acceptable MPG for a typical '86 300e?? Just curious...

I get 21-23 around town and 25-29 on the highway with my 88 3.0ltr 300E. This is using 89 octane
fuel. I seldom run 91 octane but I do run a bottle of techroline once a year to keep the injectors clean.

Dave,

Recently, a few people have told me that they often see highway mpg to be 25-27. My daughters car runs great but rarely achieves anything over 22. The car has 90k on it and consumes no oil - valve seals were replaced. Is there anything I can check, adjust, or change to improve it??

Mine has been pretty stable ever since I bought it with 92K on it. The milage hasen't changed much even though the head was reworked (camshaft, cam followers, valves, guides, seals and gasket.) I have repalced the fuel pump chack valves for hard starting. None of these changes have resulted in a change in the milage. I am still running the original rotor cap and wires @ 153K.

25 to 28 is what I see with mostly country road miles. Mine is a manual transmission which is more stingy with fuel.

Remember though, driving style can have a DRASTIC effect on fuel mileage. If you drive hard or drive a lot of stoplight to stoplight, you will use much more fuel.

When I made the switch to synthetic oil I noticed that my gas consumption improved by 1 or 2 miles per gallon. As far as I'm concerned synthetic oil pays for itself.
