Matt,

Yes, i agree that repeaters should be madatory. Currently, aside from some of the imports, only busses and tractor-trailer rigs employ repeaters. I have had serveral expereinces where repeaters would have been a God-send.

As for the daytime running lights, it's been madatory in Sweden for quite some time now and Canada has had them for over 10 years and they are DEFINITELY a good idea. I don't think we go through any more bulbs than normal. At least *I* haven't. however, I've ALWAYS driven with my headlights on during the day.

I think ppl that experience an unusual increase in headlight bulb burnouts should have their electrical system checked or ensure that they are using the correct wattage bulbs. in the end, even if it DOES cost more in terms of replacement bulbs, one's safety is certainly worth at least that much.

My only complaint about the DRLs is that most manufacturers skimp out and use a system that provides reduced power to the high-beam filament only to comply with the DRL regulations. So NO OTHER lights are on with the DRLs.

This is very dangerous because people are the laziest damn creatures on earth and many of them don't bother to turn on their lights at dusk/night figuring that DRLs are enough. The result is that they have NO dash lights or tail lights, or side markers, and their headlights are only at half-brightness. If that. they figurethat they can see so there's no problem. however they forget that people need to see them as well. This is probably my greatest pet peeve because it's very frustrating to have to try and guess if there's a car in front of you or not.

A much better system would be what MB has done for years and that is to turn on ALL the lights with the engine. this way, even if ppl are lazy, they're not invisible to the other motorists.

Ok guys, this is what I want to do. I got some blue city light bulbs, which I think are going to look totally cool. I want my city lights to be kinda like DRLs. So this is what I want to try to rig up. I want to have marker lights. But I want my city lights to be on when I turn on the car, not just when I turn the light switch to the first click. I want them to be on w/o the marker lights. I don't care if they are on while the markers are on, just not the other way around. So when my light switch is off, the city lights should be on. Is this possible? Sorry if this was confusing.

Its the different names for the different lights that are confusinng poor euro me.

1st click of the switch = side lights
2nd click = headlights, low beam
push the stalk forward, blue dash light comes on = High beam,

thats the only settings i have on mine. ALso when i say side lights, i dont mean they are side markers or attached to the side of the car, its just the name for the low wattage bulbs that are in the main headlight casing that we switch on when its dusky.

Im being thick here arent i!!!

Taxi.......

Alright, well let me try to clarify. What I am going for, is advice on how or if I can rewire it to do this.

Headlight switch off=Just city lights (or your side lights), with no other lights on. Kind of like DRLs

1st click=Marker lights (like standard US fare) where the turn signals or on and the taillights. I would also like to keep the "side lights" on too.

2nd click=headlights low beam, marker lights still obviously on, and city lights or side lights off.

And then regular high beams..

Hope this clears it up and I also hope there is a way to rig this!

Heh..okay. here's the north american translation:

what you call side lights, are what we're referring to as city lights

click 1 = city lights, side marker lights (aka running lights, standing lights or parking lights), and tail lights
click 2 = click 1 + low (dipped) beam headlights
high beam and flash to pass functions are the same.

Hope this helps

mbtjc,

if you go to some auto parts places you can pick up DRL conversion kits. I don't think they're too pricey. I don't know if there's a DIY way to do it. I'm not an electrician and I'm not sure I'd want to mess about with the electrical system on the car unless i'm 100% sure of what i'm doing.

In theory, what you'd need to do is find a low voltage source that is on when the engine is running or when the key is in the "on" position. I can't think of anything off hand. But you'll want to make sure that you don't overload the circuit that you tap into.

Other alternatives would be to build a circuit specifically for your DRLs, but that would require paying around with the ignition wiring of you want to do it properly.

Matt.

Given that you hail from Essex, we can forgive you owning a Ford, but surely after the first, you are supposed to learn your lesson??

more confusion

I have DEPO euros for my 300CE. The "city" lights appear to be pre wired. No jumper wire. The brown wire hooks into the headlight socket? Blue wire goes somewhere else(cannot see)I have yet to put a bulb in because the ones sent do not fit. I do have a 5w bulb with no base which appears to fit the bulb holder. Anybody else bought Depos with this wiring??????
