Question My 190 NO LONGER leaks or uses oil !!!

It should be ??? instead of !!!. You may remember my thread WHERE is my oil going? from about a month ago. I have a 1991 190E 2.6 that was using about 1 qt per 600 miles. It was widely assumed to be the valve seals (or worse, the guides). Anyway, the car had a rough start and idle so I had it in the independent MB shop for new valve seals.

Tech calls me and says, you need new injectors, so I had new injectors and a new filter. Although I tended to agree with Mr. Brotherton about replacing just the valve seals until they don't stop the leaking, this tech poohpoohed that and recommended a full valve job which I vetoed.

SO, I just had the oil change, leak inspection, new fuel injectors, and they also DECARBONIZED by engine (a solution on the inside to clear out the carbon deposits).

RESULT: The injectors fixed the rough idle/start -- it runs perfectly. However, THE CAR NO LONGER USES OIL! What? Yes, I said the car no longer uses oil. Actually, after about 500 miles I was waiting for the oil light to come on because I knew I was needing to add oil (as usual) but it never came on. I checked it -- still full. Now, today, at 1100 miles I checked it again and it is STILL FULL.

What the heck is going on? The tech said that maybe the decarbonization cleared out a spot that was not allowing a good seal and no longer leaks. [Now remember, I've only had the car since November and the dealer serviced it immediately and included and oil change]. I'm thinking that, at that 1st oil change, the dealer didn't get the filter tight (or something along those lines) and then this oil change remedied that AND MY SEALS WEREN'T LEAKING AT ALL.

The story you just read is true. My car no longer uses 1 qt per 500 miles and I am perplexed.

Good to hear!
Just figured out how much a quart is (roughly a litre).. and figure I'm using about 2 quarts per 1000 m's.. yes, gotta get it fixed (at least I've got no catalyst).

My take on this is the following:

Your injectors were clogged and had bad spray patterns. This caused unburnt fuel to wash down the cylinder walls diluting the engine oil AND carbon-up the combustion chambers. Diluted oil will burn-off rapidly.

I imagine you've experienced a surge in your MPG and have much more power since the injectors were replaced.

My 2 cents.

Hi brooks,
Can you please post how much the fuel injectors were?
I'm having a similar problem with bad starts and am wondering
if this might be the problem. Am not leaking/using oil though.
I would be grateful, thanks.

Thumbs up

In reply to haasman, my MPG has gone up somewhat, but not a lot. I DO have a good bit more power than before, of course. Your theory makes as much sense as anything else.

To the request for the repair price: The labor was $207 (about 3 hours) and the injectors were about $31 each (shop price). Of course, the valve seals would have been 300 or so and the valve job would have been 2,000. I'd say I got a pretty good deal if my oil usage stays at zero.

Could someone explain what this decarabonization process involves? My 16V burns about a quart per 800 miles with no visible smoke etc. Would this help my oil usage?

Thanks,

My take on these affects of decarbonization is that there are two ways you BURN oil: one is you leak it by the valve guides and it burns in either in combustion chamber or the exhaust. The other way has two corollaries and are due to rings.

The first corollary says the rings are not sweeping the lube oil from the cyclinder wall and it gets burned in the combustion chamber. The second also comes from the carboning of rings and that is the instance of large blow-by due to carbon stuck rings. The large blow-by causes such velocity backwards in the PCV system that oil is carried into the intake and thus the cylinder.

We have had numerous cars in the last few years with either huge smoking problems or no start due to lack of compression, fixed by decarbonizing. Had a 600SEL from a board (mercedesshop) member tow his car over 100 miles after the diagnosis was no compression. I talked to him recently, over a year later, and the car is doing OK.

We poured a small amount into each cylinder through the spark plug hole and rotated the engine by hand a number of times and then let it sit for a few hours. After running and getting warmer up we do another car through the plenum and wait 20min or more and drive it hard.

So how are these cars decarbonized?

What about the products called engine flushes? The ones you pour into the engine right before an oil change, without driving?

Sounds interesting

What causes carbonizing and can anything be done to prevent it?

Thanks for the info, Steve. It sounds like this is something that I could do myself, as I'm a die-hard DIY . What products do you use? X-66 or similar? Do use the same product in the cylinder chamber as in the intake plenum? How do you inject it into the intake? Spray? Any additional info would be awesome!

Thanks Steve! As always, you're a great source of accurate info!

X66p. The p refers to it being a pull tab top. To induce it through the plenum one must look at the vacuum lines and find a nice sized one that comes from the central plenum (not an individual intake runner as that would only do one cyl). Read the directions on the can and allow enough to be slowly pulled into an engine running slightly above idle (through a small piece of hard vacuum line). Allow it to run in fast enough to slow the engine speed and roughen the idle. do this til the can is gone.

Same apply for 3.0??

This is a great topic.

Does the 3.0 have the same tendancies toward carbon buildup as the 2.6 we are talking about? I've got about 150K on the 3.0 in my 89CE and have a little bit of a rough idle. I've been putting off the injectors.

Also, can "injectors in these systems with the fuel "distributor" be cleaned? I've never had them removed and it's so drastically different than the "american" fuel injectors I'm used to.

Thanks again, Steve. Do you have any tips on where I could find the X66? It doesn't seem to be widely distributed.

Later,

X66 - as for the name that's it's known by at the GM dealership, check this thread. Look at the first post made by LONGSTON.

Delco X-66 de-carbonizing agent
