Removing rear axle, (ALMOST OUT!)

im in the process of doing a rear wheel bearing job/ brake job on my 1982 300td ive been fixing up, following one of the stickies on the forum, i am at the point where im tapping out the axles and the passenger side popped right out and i hung it with wire, but the driver side wont QUITE go out far enough, im talking a quarter inch or less, i can get it to the point where the splines no longer mesh but not far enough, any tips are appreciated im getting frustrated... lol

I'm using a brass drift, and a 3# hammer, i also wrapped a piece of rebar in a towel and tried to gently pry but backed off

Try rotating the axle 30 degrees at a time. That will reset the position of the balls and races in the cv and will give you an additional degree of freedom. Don't force it. When you get it out, inspect the movement of the inner and outer CV, and replace the axle if the action is notchy.

Don't worry about getting it back in. You can get stuck with them both on remove or installing, but just play with them a bit, and bingo they will be in.

bearings are all in and look great axles are in, pretty much buttoned up, pry bars and jaw pullers are indispensable!
