A question for our Canadian brothers...

A co-worker of mine is moving to Canada, namely Missassauga (sp??), in a couple of weeks.

She has a California-spec 1998 C280, and is going to have the car transported to Canada.

Do you anticipate any problems she'll have getting the car registered in Canada?

Will she be required to convert the car from miles to Kilometers on the odometer, etc.?

If so, how does she get this done?

Thanks in advance.

Your friend moving to Missisauga will not have any problem whatsoever.
There will be no modification of any kind required on the car. The speedo will not have to be replaced. The only problem will be that the car will be very slow. Everybody will be doing 120 while he'll be going only 60.
he may be required to go through a safety inspection before registration, but it is a standard practice in Ontario for all cars at a certain age (not sure about 1998). The safety check is basically lights, brakes, steering and the like. There will be no problem with pollution matters as both the US and Canada have standardized their requirements.
Canada say welcome to your friend.

As per the website listed - she will have to get the speedometer changed to read KM's and will have to have daytime running lights.

By this link:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/importusa/english/im3mb_e.htm

It seems to me that the 1998 C280 is NOT on the "admissable" list.

Even if you can get clearance, you will need to modify:

Bumpers to 8 km/h standard.

Metric instruments.

Daytime Running Lights - The MB module is $$$$.

While that is a short list, it looks to me like it could cost thousands.

I still can't find where the 98 C280 is considered admissable, even modified.

You're right. It's not on the admissable list.

I even called the 800 number in Canada, and spoke with a live person, and she confirmed that the 98 C280 can't be permanently registered in Canada.

In fact, the list is very odd. The 94 and 95 E320 are on the list, but the 1993 300E is not, even though it's the same car and same engine. The 86-92 300E's are on the list. Strange.

She's wondering if she can drive the car for two years in Canada, but keep it registered in California. She's planning on coming back in two years to go back to college.

I have NO idea of how that list came about. It does seem kinda strange. It might have to do with changing emissions regs, or who knows? It could be made up based on the whims of some low-level government employee rolling the dice, if I know our Federal Government.

I don't see a single W202 car on the list!

I met someone a few months ago who told me he purchased a 1993 400E on e0bay out of a dealer in New Jersey. He did not mentionned anything he had to do on the car. He still has it with the MPH speedo, no daytime running lights.
I also know of a an other import (without any modifications) of a 1970 280SL.
Go figure.....

Yeah, sometimes. My dad was the Director General of Health and Welfare, working directly for the Minister back under Monique Begin and then Jake Epp when Mulroney took power.

When he arrived in Ottawa, there was a small fleet of Limo's in the parking garage. When he asked his EA what they were for, she replied:

"Why, for you sir, of course."

Whenever we'd come to visit, I'd be shocked at the levels of waste. Of course, there were also areas where they needed MORE money. Typical big organization that has difficulty allocating resources properly.

And yes, under my Dad the limosines were eliminated, and the DG drove his own car and filled out a mileage expense claim, like everyone else.

What drove my Dad out of Federal civil service were the cost-cutting measures under Epp. He kept the waste, and eliminated good people. It was a terrible time in Ottawa. The stress of firing so many people, people that were deperately needed, took it's toll on Dad. He "retired" at 47.

As noble as government service can be, it can also be frustrating in the extreme.

From the millions in Grants for nothing to bogus companies - the lost millions in $1000 bills at the mint that were to be destroyed - but went missing - and we apathetic Canucks say - "the govt. squanders Govt. money - but what can you do?" Please realize - THERE IS NO GOVT. MONEY - It is your hard earned money given to govt. to provide services for YOU! When govt. wastes money - it is YOUR money they waste.
The govt civil service union is now airing an ad on radio - apparently the Cnd. govt. wants to quit having civil servants supply the food chain requirements for getting food and supplies to our troops in Afganistan and instead want to give it to a British firm that can do it cheaper. The union ad states "do you want your troops to be supplied by caring Canadians or a company who is only interested in a profitable bottom line?" Socialism is scary - isn't it?

Well, I'm actually quite socialistic in my outlook. I believe strongly in social justice.

I think we have done much to smooth the boom/bust cycle through monetary policy and the creation of programs like "EI" which aid families through transitional stages and sudden downturns in the economy. I don't like EI premiums being a cash-cow for the feds, though. It's an insurance plan, not a tax grab.

I do agree strongly with wide-ranging and universally accessed health care and education programs. A well educated and healthy citizen population is better for all people, regardless of economic status. Wealthy people benefit from lower crime rates, and companies have education costs spread over the entire tax base. Our per-capita cost for health care is still much lower than the US, despite universal access.

But, our current Federal gov't has betrayed Canadians on many levels. They tell us there's no more money for education, health care, or infrastructure, and then can whip $6 Billion up for increased airport security and other "security" measures. And $101 Million for a new private jet pair for the PM and Cabinet. Fly coach buck-o's. The list of recent fiscal debacles is long indeed. And the sad part is, most of it is based on corruption.

Our problem in Canada has nothing to do with the amount of tax dollars that we collect. There's plenty. The problem is that our elected officials see no reason to safeguard those funds, and ensure that they are being spent to the benefit of all/most Canadians.

But, do we think that any of the "challengers" would be any different? Even the NDP gov't's that we have elected have shown themselves to become nothin but a bunch of self-serving greed-infested morons once they take office. I have voted in every federal/provincial/municipal election since I was of age. But, young people don't vote. I asked some. "Why bother? They're all the same. Change comes from the outside, not the inside in this country."

It's getting tougher to disagree with them...

Sorry to disagree with you - but a country can only be strong with a political system that has both a right wing and a left wing. Here in Canada we have a right - left wing (Conservative - Alliance) - a center left wing (Liberals) and a left - left wing (NDP) There is no Capitalist right wing - although I hear rumblings from Alberta that such a party MIGHT start up. Show me a socialist country that has been around for over 100 years - There is none. The capitalistic USA has been around for over 200 years - their system (though not perfect) works! As one person told me once " An eagle cannot soar with two right wings or two left wings - it will flounder. But an eagle with a good right wing and a good left wing - in balance - can soar to new heights" In The USA substitute Republican and Democrat for the words left and right. In Canada use Conservative, Alliance, Liberal, NDP and Communist party for the word left. Unfortunately - we have no right wing. With all parties agreeing on the same stuff - from different angles - there really is no choice - and you wonder why some Canadians are so ticked off that they don't vote?
The parties are all the same and each pull the same stupid things to pull the wool over our eyes. When the Reform Party looked threatening to the Liberals - they hauled out the magic phrase that the Reform Party had a (ready for it) "HIDDEN AGENDA". They never said what that agenda was - but it scared Canadians enough to keep the Reform from power. Here in Manitoba - the last Provincial election - The Far left NDP accused the long serving Conservatives of (are you ready) "HALLWAY MEDICINE" - because there are too few beds in hospitals - people were forced to stay in hallways for recovery and treatment. The NDP got elected - and you know what they did? THEY CURED HALLWAY MEDICINE!- They spent millions removing the hallways from hospitals and turned them into open area treatment regions! - Guess what? They cannot be accused of Hallway Medicine!!!
I'm sorry - but since Trudeau - this country has been going downhill. New Zealand went bankrupt - with a smaller national debt than we have - and just recently - so did Venezuela (however you spell it) . Check out your facts - we are more in debt per capita for federal, provincial and municipal debt(not deficit - actual debt owing to others) by more than double what the USA is in debt per capita.
Who protects our country - The Canadian Peace Keepers? No - the US Military - Why? because our govt. decimated our armed forces to the point that they can no longer protect this country without the help of our southern neighbours. The True North STRONG and Free???
- I can only wish.
