I have a 1990 190E. I've pretty much pinned the gasoline odor down to situations when I've driven the car for a while and parked it (for example, while shopping)and when I return to the car it smells of gasoline. Same deal when I return home and park it in the garage. Keep in mind the odor is not overpowering, but it is definately there. A few months ago I had the fuel pump seals replaced and my mechanic has been over the car stem to stern and found nothing since. By the way, the smell seems to come from under the hood. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Matt

Have your tech take off the air cleaner housing and check the EHA!! Sounds like the problem.

You've been very helpful, but could you please explain what is an EHA? It would help me with my mechanic. Thanks!

matt, I had the same problem with my 90'190e 2.6 a
long time ago. First, i replaced was the gas
cap.seems like odor was coming from the back.
air filter all clean(k&n) and then finally the canister purge. this is located in the left front fender, what it does is collect
vapors. simply take off the rubber cover on the fender and you'll see the canister and disconnect the hose and blow pressurized air
through for a few minutes. This will eventually get rid of the gas vapor(odor).

The EHA is a small box mounted to the FUEL DISTRIBUTOR, that controls the fuel pressure for fuel mixture adjustment. Often they will leak, and that isn't good. By removing the air cleaner assembly you can see if it's leaking.

"tito" is correct about the PURGE system cannister causing fuel odor at the left front fender area. But that should't happen unless the purge system has other problems!
