Limp Mode from severe curb scrap?

Hi. need help. Trying to understand issue.

my daughter had a severe curb scrap...chipping a chuck of the rim and tire off, as well as, throwing the alignment off. A week or so later after no driving a lot, after stopping to gas station, her a hard noise when turning the wheel and noticed the car was in limp mode. no park or mode on display. stopped for a moment and turned car off. No limp mode. drove ok until next day. limp mode. intermediate bouts until finally its stuck completely in mode now. But before, got a diagnostic and said bad shifter. 1100.00 dollars. although he said check engine light when off when he drove around corners and no problems with him. As soon as i got back in, limp mode. turn off then for a few and normal. now limp mode forever....

You need to hit the curb really hard to take out a chunk of tire and rim.

It sounds like a wheel speed sensor has been damaged, which could be triggering limp mode.

Hi newbenzowner1234....Welcome to the forum! I'm going to agree with the other members; speed sensor is likely the issue. I would be happy to send you a link to our catalog where you'll be able to find a speed sensor, if that's the part that needs to be addressed. Can you please let us know what year and model the Mercedes is.

I've also included a link to our Technical Articles. This is where we break down every part/system of the car by year and model for those looking to DIY their projects. Please take advantage of it if you decide to go that route! Welcome again!

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Not sure what kind of car we're talking about here but FWIW I've never seen a bad wheel speed sensor put a car in limp mode, and by limp I'm assuming the transmission won't shift???

The shift indicator going blank is a classic sign of a faulty shifter which WILL cause a limp condition.........

if you have standard issue tire/rim combo, it may be challenging to take out
a chunk out of both tire and wheel. with low profile tire, it is quite easy even
at snail's pace. it happened to.....uh....friend of a friend. ;-)

Funny, now I am noticing the original post specifically mentioned the shifter error.
