engine shot? 82SL

I was told then timing chain tensioner caused the timing chain to skip a tooth. Does this make sense?

yep very common probably bent the valves on the driver side

burtajack 08-24-2016 10:08 PM

Is this fixable?

Everything can be fixed.

When it comes to Mercedes engine parts prices most people won't want to fix it though.

Which engine is it?

every thing is fixable the real question is how much which depends on how much damage but most run between 3k to 5k

did it skip just 1 tooth? or, did it jump enough so that the valves are bent on the driver's side head?

that engine can skip 4 teeth without damage. if so, replace the tensioner, chain and guides. otherwise, you're in deep pockets for the repair. good luck, chuck.

It happened to my 380 engine. Most likely you've bent a valve or two. If the body is worth saving the engine is worth repairing.

The intake, heads and timing cover will have to come off the engine to do the repair. That's if you haven't punctured a piston with a bent valve. I replaced a piston, did a valve job and spent just under a grand on my repair job. I did all the labor except the valve work.

What RPM was the engine doing when the chain jumped?
