spring compressor question
 

I need to replace the lower control arms on the w201.

the spring compressors are fairly inexpensive now on ePey. however, they all say that the compressor will only work on the rear springs on the w201. is that right?

I thought that was why the tool comes with 2 sizes of plates.

You can use them on the front, small plates fit the front springs - the large plates are for W140s W123's, etc. I would never bother using a spring compressor on the rears on any of those cars (W201, W124, R129, W210, W202) they just don't need it and the compressor is too bulky to work properly back there anyway.

You'll be good to go with one of those $80-$120 units. Even though I've got a Klann unit now, I've used the China version for a few cars and it performed decently. May have to file out the plate holes to let the actual compressor fit through properly, but you get what you pay for.

Keep the tool well greased and absolutely do NOT use an impact. You will jump the compressor out of the plates and have a bad time.

I'm setting up to do some rear suspension work on my w124. Planning on dropping the subframe to get at the differential mounts.

Bsmuwk, could you tell how you would accomplish this work on the rear without using a spring compressor please?

yes, the rear suspension can be lowered without using a spring compressor but
it doesn't take much time to snug one up if not just to take up some of the
tension and moderate the risk. so I apply the hybrid technique, using spring
compressor AND disconnecting/lowering the suspension. also, I should point
out that some aftermarket springs have tighter windings and doesn't lend to
the sole use of the plate design for removal. r-

pg 2-3 of this thread has tips/photos on lowering the rear suspension w/o
spring compressor. but it must be said, out of an abundance of caution,
that you need to be extremely careful, methodical, and use multiple jacks
if possible.

When using the tool offset the notches in the plates. When they line up the spring can bow off to one side and if your fingers are in the way it can break them. Ask me how I know.
