1984 500SE Gray Market running rich.
I have been away from the web forums for 5 years now and came back because I am having a emissions problem with my '84 500SE. Being a Gray market import, I know this car will not run as a LEV or close to it but enough to atleast not smell like a spent refinery when going down the road and getting less than 10mpg. I have done the basic maintenance and chain was done years ago. I have also had the top ends emissions cleanout service.. Where else do I look? EGR valves on the manifold? Coolant temp sensor?
Any help would be great. Cheers.

1) Ensure that the ignition system is in top condition; plugs, wires, cap, rotor, & timing (including full advance). 2) Ensure that the Control Pressure Regulator (aka: Warm Up Regulator/WUR) is heating properly, and that control pressure is rising with temperature. 3) If equipped with an O2 sensor (and therefore feedback control of mixture), make certain that all the components (O2 sensor, controller, frequency valve) are functioning. |

Adding to this, check the vacuum lines, especially the little rubber bits that connect everything together. As these engines rely on vacuum changes to adjust the mixture, vacuum leaks can cause some strange issues. If you haven't changed the vacuum boots and you don't know when they were last done, replace them. Cheap parts, doesn't take long to do, and you'll notice an improvement, whether or not it's the sole cause of your running issues.
It is also worth mentioning that you can adjust the overall fuel mixture by adjusting the screw in the center of the air cleaner. I forget the size, I think it's a 3mm allen. With the engine off, push it straight down and feel for it to engage the adjustment head. The part you insert the allen into is spring loaded, you'll feel it drop down and "grab" the head below. Make TINY adjustments. 1/16 of a turn at a time. CCW should be leaner, CW richer. Being a grey-market car, you won't have an O2 sensor. |
