OVP relay removal
1988 260E - Can somebody shed some light on how to get that rascal out from its nest?! I've seen those with a bolt that needs to be removed but this doesn't have one. Sorry, no pic. Thanks

Hey Dale....check out the link below to one of your tech articles on site. I'm hoping that it'll help you with the OVP removal. Best of luck! :)

OVP relay removal
The link is not pertinent...As I stated in the OP, mine does not have the bolt holding it down. I'll try to get a pic later to post on here. I've got a new OVP on its way and I'd really like to know what I'm doing when trying to remove the old one!http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...9248bfe42d.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...2a4836c354.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...5dbf0aea93.jpg
I tried taking a few pics but it's so tight with the battery in there and I don't have time now to take it out, so hopefully it's evident what's holding it in. Any ideas? |

Some OVPs are held in place with a #2 screw instead of a bolt. In any event, replace it with a bolt for future ease of access.
I suggest you remove the drain channel above it so you can get a clear view of what you are up against. To do this, first gently pry up the lower black rubber weather trim at the bottom of the windshield, next remove the 2 #2 phillips screws, then pull forward the white retaining tab (if present) from under the channel towards the center of the car, then pull the rubber strip trim running along the channel, and finally pull the channel up and out of the way. Replace in reverse order, making sure that the channel drain fits in the drain tube at the fender. |

Thank you for this tip, I'll look at it to see if that is a viable route. It's a bit of a pain with two drivers sharing the same car because just when I think I've got an hour or two to work on it....*phhhtttt* one of them needs it! I'll check back when I look into it hopefully this weekend. |
This thing CAN'T be that difficult to remove.... But I'm perplexed [emoji35]

... It appears to have NO screw or bolt retaining it as others have suggested and that I've seen on other cars. Looks as though the OVP has been "snapped" into place behind the black plastic framework.

Ok. I'll stop whining...i figured it out! I loosened the black bracket from its moorings after I pulled the Klima and the FP relay(?) and then I basically rotated the OVP from its holder by pulling forward on the upper half of the relay causing the back part of the metal bracket that's attached to it to come up and out of the retainer it was in. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e77794bab7.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...113b5b4a7e.jpg

While yours was a great tip for opening up some working space there, as it turns out, I really do not believe anything had to be removed beyond the plastic water shield behind the battery - that is, HAD I KNOWN how to simply grab hold of the OVP relay and gently rotate it forward and it will pop out of the retainer. Hope this helps someone at some other time [emoji851] Thanks for the responses.. Dale |
The chap that came up with this idear, to retain the relay must be a retard . I took me ages to pull mine last year. Best jpb after this , is to do a good clean out of the battery tray .Remove the tray and clean it out underneath re coat it with wax oil or if you dont have any grease will be ok for a time.
