Got me to thinking about the age of mine so looking back into my maintenance 'archives' I see that it was almost 5 years to the day that I had a Mercedes branded battery installed in our wagon. It is still going strong. I'm thinking it cost me ~$170 back then.

The problem with dealer battery comes when you need to swap it for warranty. In hot climates like FL, batteries often die in 3 years. I can't speak to MB dealers, but the Dodge dealer was unacceptable on a Mopar return: no simple swap, had to bring the car in (tough to do when the battery is fried) so they could test the charging system. Not worth it for a pro-rated refund.
Our local Home Depot is now stocking car batteries at attractive prices. I'm wondering how their exchange process will be.

Just purchased a group 48 from Home Depot, $109.00. Tried Autozone 1st, clerk couldn't find a 1983 R107 280SL Euro in his database (no surprise there) but the surprise was that he couldn't get a result for group 48 either. I offered to see what was on the shelf but he was reluctant to sell me a battery for a vehicle not in his system. I should have asked him if he actually wanted to sell stuff. Web Search for group 48, almost the first thing that popped up was Autozone, group 48 with their own p/n designation. I voted with my wallet, did not go back there.

The auto parts is just protecting its own interests.
Customer buys non standard battery, installs it and damages the electrical system. Now they come back at the store threatening law suit because the battery_YOU_ sold me damaged my car. Doesn't matter that the "customer" selected a reverse terminal battery and ignored the spark while connecting the battery terminal.. . . |

I can totally understand the liability aspect that but wanted only same battery as I set on the counter in front of the clerk. I learned about what fits doesn't mean that it will work when I put a spare battery in a 280SE W108 a long time ago. Taller battery allowed positive terminal to touch the hood resulting in perfect circle of melted paint . It didn't take a long time to understand what was happening.
