1995 W124 Battery

I need a new battery for by 95 wagon. I'm looking to spend as little as possible. Do I have to purchase ones that are recommended when I search online or can I get away with something smaller? Most I have found are $170 and up.

If I can get something different what specs do I need to be aware of?

I live in NH so we have cold winters.

Thanks

Group 49 size battery. Just shop a little harder. I see good ones for 130-150.

Have you checked with your dealer? I needed a new battery a few years ago for my 91 300TE and it was somewhere around $100 for the Mercedes branded battery.

Edit:

Pep Boys currently has the Bosch battery on sale for $130. They have come way up in price since I last looked.

Check the big part stores for "used" batteries, which are older stock at a big discount.

Gas or diesel? If you are not going to use the "REST" engine off interior heating function, a smaller battery can be used, just size it for your engine.

Also look at salvage yards or scrap metal facilities that accept cars for used batteries and only consider one that is a few years old. The scrap metal yard I deal with sells used batteries for $ 15 - $ 20 but you have to test them for your self.

No rest function on the USA 124.

I bought a new group 49 yesterday, 36 month replacement warranty (which is pretty good these days) from Sam's Club. It was $121 and change.

What group size is in it now? It calls for a 48/H6 or a 49. Probably could use either, with a 48/H6 costing less. Costco has some great prices on Interstate.

Good luck and keep us posted!

phone up some chrysler dealers, The LX cars use the same H8 battery and they sometimes have a good deal going on.

For low cost batteries you can try

parts store used battery shelf
interstate/deka battery warehouse
scrapyard (went yesterday and picked up a pretty good H8 for a freind for 25 dollars)

I have NOT put a proper MBZ battery in my cars for a while as Costco don't carry them. I just look for one at Costco with the + terminal on the right hand side and with similar height and bought them. They never give me problem but I am in SoCal and the temperature is always mild and cars are in garage. I have even put a battery with + terminal on the wrong side for a while as a workaround, I just extended the cable.

I bought a Mercedes brand battery for my car (a '98 e300) from a Mercedes dealer about a year ago for $160 (there was a 10% discount). I installed it myself. The previous Mercedes battery had lasted 8 years and nine months.

The cost was less than the priced quoted over the telephone by Sears ($225) and by two chain auto parts places, Auto Zone and another one, can't remember the name (about $190).

+1 on Sams, but not worth it if you don't have/don't know anyone with a membership. The other place I've bought batteries is Summit but I doubt you have one near you. They run good deals on Optima batteries, I got a full size red top for ~$140.

I use a Group 26R in my '88 190E 2.6. It's smaller/lighter/cheaper than any OE replacement Group 48, but I never have to do a cold start below freezing.

The currently installed 26R was made by Johnson Controls, and I bought it from Autozone, but same JC battery is generic to many "brands" - just a different stick on label.

It's 15 years old and cost 40 bucks back in '01, but current replacements are typically a little over $100,

Battery prices have really skyrocketed in recent years.

x2 on the optima red-top, has started my cars winter and summer, I believe the one in the '87TD was new 2007, would sit for a month or more in the winter waiting for a nice dry day and still glow/crank fine.
