89 300e w124 questions, please help!!
I will be picking up a silver 1989 300e tomorrow eveing and there are a couple of problems I would liek to try and iron out when I bring it home. One, the door locks do not function properly. When you unlock the drivers door, none of the other locks open or close for that matter. All must be opened and closed manually. I know the vacuum pump is under the rear seat but I am wondering if that is where I should start or if I should start with fuses or somewhere else.
Also, the exhaust sounds like a "rice rocket" and I am not sure why. I think it has the stock MB exhaust but am not sure. If it is the stock exhaust, any guess to why it would sound like this? It passed smog a couple months ago so I dont think it has any affect on that but am not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I used to have the same problem, sometimes they opened, sometimes they didn't. I've had all the vacuum units replaced with electric servo motors, no more than $20 per door.
Now no more hassle with leaking vacuum lines etc. here.

You need to start by listening to see if you hear the pump when you lock the door from the inside. If you don't hear it, remove the rear seat and check for voltage at the pump when you lock. If there is no voltage start by checking fuses and door switch. If there is voltage, the problem may be the pump.
If the pump is coming on but none of the locks are working, then it is time to start looking for leaks. Good luck,

Franksgarage is right on the money. I had the same problem with my 89 300E, so I had remote central locking fitted for around $100NZ. It is a lot more convenient and cheaper than trying to fix leaks.

I had the same problem on a 1986 300E when I bought it 6 months ago. I checked under the rear seat, and found the vacuum line had come detached. It would seem that enough downward force in just the right spot on the seat can cause a tug on the lines. Talk about a cheap fix!
