E-Code Headlamp Alignment

Just got some E-codes put on the W124. Light output is much better, but I suspect the aim is out of spec. Any tips for approximating vertical and horizontal axes without too much trouble? I've seen posts about trying to find level ground with a wall 25 feet away, but after that I start to get confused on creating an aiming target and calibrating to it. Although, I guess I wouldn't mind figuring out the process with a reasonable degree of competence and understanding, as I wouldn't mind calibrating the aim in my BMW, which I just sort of eyeballed after switching to Euros. Just looking for an explanation in plain English, I guess.

I have always just gone to an empty street or parking lot and adjusted by eye making sure to correctly pull the left light in a bit so that it doesn't blind oncoming traffic.
