Clunking when switching gears

Alright, when i switch from park to any gear,(mainly reverse) my car takes a few seconds to switch and when it gets there it makes a clunk and the whole car is forced in that direction...I'v been reading and found out it could be the flex disk, is this correct, and which one would it be the front or rear...having rear wheel drive i would persume it would be the rear, but everyone says u rairly change ur rear... if it's not that, what else could it be?
Thanks in Advance:D

We assume you checked the tranny fluid.
Bright red, and full. Some patience is needed to get an accurate dipstick reading.

Also - when was the last time you replaced the fluid/filter.

The delayed response definitely sounds more like transmission than rear end ??

Eliminating the obvious first ;) ;)

Got the new tranny fluid and tranny filter about 6months ago...Altho when i got it done it was very low (thats when i got the car). and yes, the fluid right now is full:)

Mine sort of 'clunks' into reverse, on both it's old tranny and it's new (reconditioned) one.. I think the older models do.. there's sort of a bump as it engages.. but no noise. A Clunking as in noise *could* be a flex disc.
Mine engages Drive smoothly however.
