'99 S500. Altanator Disaster. FYI.

Just got around to installing a eBay 150amp alt'. As I put the B- Ground back on, BIG FLASH and dash lights on, EIS Denied start through can gateway in shifter and ETM. SRS came on and ABS too. Codes stated Can resistance too low.

Steering never locked even with key cycled....ie...engine not cranked but steering lock not engaging.

Pulled all wires off alternator and she fired right up , per normal, just like nothing happened.

Hunting help on Google, saw a lot of Cold Weather 'Key won't turn" posts.

So now to hunt up an alt'.

Anyone else had in freezing weather, ignition key ( EIS type.) not turning ?

I already sent email to seller. One year warranty. ...but not keen on installing another eBay alt'.
MB wants $900 for new alt'.

On other cars, I've seen a voltage spike from an inductor cause odd behavior. The alt issue might have provided a voltage spike.

B- ground as in negative battery terminal?

How many wires were on the alternator?

peachparts, the dealer and a few other select parts outlets. MB used to offer nearly any part for any MB going back to 1927. Well, that policy has recently changed and not for the better.

I'm not happy and I've been letting them know that unless they shape up, they are destined to become just another five year car. Buy today, trade it off in five years because you can't get parts.....

Define big flash and is the flash different with the alt disconnected. ( if you do this be sure to keep the bat disconnected for a few minutes so the cars capacitors drain down. )

There are a fair amount of capacitors across the cars computers, a capacitor looks like a dead short until it charges up so some flash is expected. Various CAN modules are probably waking up at the same time as well adding to the load.

Sometimes jiggling the battery terminal while hooking it up can scramble the boot sequence on computers and cause odd behavior. You could try to connect the alt while the battery is connected to see if you get any sparks there.

Big enough to worry you if you ever work on Mercedes.

I'm having the original alt' rebuild locally. On this new alt' it was feed back down the D+ wire.

Original alt' had a/c ripple. On the scope, it was one diode leaking.

UPDATE 1999 S500.
Looks like it may have taken out the rear SAM now...

Dash info' says 'FOG/Tail lamp fault.'

Also found corrosion behind left rear tail lamp assembly so even with power, fog and tail lamp wouldn't light up as contact ribbon to pins covered in rust .. No power coming from rear SAM to left tail/fog bulbs.Turn bulb working though...

Very small flash when connecting Neg- clamp now.

Like I said, engine runs fine without alt' connected. Any one with a used Rear SAM.?

It's a Mercedes. It's a V8. Alt' needs rad' fan removed to access alt' bolts. Alt' wires are short. Alt' Batt+ is unsheilded. What do you think?

you can use ebay as long as you do your research.
plenty of good sellers on there who will stand by there sales.
read through feedback for a few minutes and you can easily see who is serious and who is not.

No reason to be rude. Everyone understands your frustration, but some people are faint of heart and destroy things in the process due to a lack of mechanical aptitude/lack of experience.

eBay works fine for alternators and a lot of things like Hog said. No reason to pay $tealer prices. I bought multiple things, ball joints, starters, all quality parts.

46 years as a Euro tech. I'm 71 and speak as I find. Rude ? No, just stating the obvious is not being rude. You assumed ( Along with oldsinner 111.) I had not powered the vehicle down. Poor assumption. You had no idea of my history.

As for eBay, I have dozens of parts and components off their vendors and private sales people. Nearly 100% functionality.

No, I am not frustrated, what ever you took my post to mean. The title says it..''....FYI.'' I was sharing my time in the shop with an S500. I'm sure you could tell a few stories too.

Sorry you took offense. Please accept my apologies and I'll try not to do that again. ;)

As an addendum to my trials...This alt' seems to be one of those that communicate with the ecm.

Mercedes has quoted me $1010.00 now.

It's okay, I'll let it slide this time. ;)

All good no worries. Interested in the outcome. Keep us updated.
