Which hoses are you referring to? The upper and lower radiator hoses, heater hoses or the little PITA hose between the pump housing and the water inlet housing?

The return hose is the upper radiator hose.

The lower radiator hose is a (relatively) short, fitted hose which goes from the lower radiator to a pipe. This pipe is the heater by-pass/return. There is another fitted hose leading up to the thermostat housing.

The lower hose can be changed without removing anything although removal of the alternator simplifies the task.

The by-pass hose is a horse of a different color. It CAN be done and I have done it ONCE (but never again!!) without moving the compressor.

You need to determine exactly which hose you are replacing before you start randomly removing parts.

There is also a short straight hose connecting the thermostat housing to the water pump housing.

I'll take some photos to show you the different hoses. My M110 does not have the compressor mounted so you'll be able to get a clear look at the different hoses. Hopefully they will clarify what Frank and I are saying.
