M120 coil pack question
 

Hi guys,


Hoping some of the more technical among you might be able to help me out.


We're building a project car with an M120 engine base and the original spark setup was with plug leads and distributors, but we're wanting to go to the later version with what look like they are coil on plug setup.


My questions are.........


1. are the packs that are fitted to the later models internally ignited ? ie don't have an external ignitor pack somewhere ?


2. if they are internally ignited...... does anyone have a pin out for the coils ?


3. does anyone know where I can source the connectors for the coils so we can terminate them onto our ECU loom (Motec M150)

If you had the computers,and wiring harness,and sensors sure.But my experince says use only bosch parts.Or contact turbo bandit for info on their setup.

Not sure which of my 3 questions you're answering there ...........

Is turbo bandit on this forum I assume ?

The M120 is pretty much 2 inline 6 M104 engines stuck together. The M104 2.8 and 3.2 from 93 ish to 99 use dual ended coils ( one end on a plug then a wire to another cylinder. ) To make this work you would need to change valve covers.

The ECM drives ( ignites ) the coils.

The coil connector is coaxial and I don't know where you can get them other than clipping a harness.

Thanks for that. So the example that I've shown (which is for an M120) is that the type you're talking about ? As they don't look like a coax connector so just wanted to be sure we were talking about the same thing.

The coil in the pic isn't a M104 type and I can't say with 100% certainty that very late M120 didn't use that coil. As far as I know, the non distributor M120 used M104 coils. Stop in the performance section of this list and see if anyone has pics / info.

The late M120 used a single coil per cylinder like the M119 and as far as I know it's a "dumb" coil.

I know we're not doing what's normally done so it's not always easy, but thanks for offering what you know, it all helps.

1) The primary of the coil(The coil is a step up transformer with a primary and a secondary), and each bank has the drive has its drive transistors at the computer module which drive each coil.

E) You may not see the diagrams, but print legend and diagnostics. I Uploaded the diagrams.

3)Mercedes sells the connectors and pins, but one can yank the connectors from a junk M119 harness from a self-serve junk yard.

OK so I know most people on here might hate me for this, but we ended up using Honda parts that fit perfectly........ just happened to have some around from my race car and so we tried them and they fit perfectly. Unfortunately because we weren't using the factory intake manifold the factory coils wouldn't fit properly either.

I drew up some mounting plates for them and bolted them in place and I think they look great. Can still use the factory clips for the wiring too.

Just in case anyone else wants to know they're off a J32A2 Honda engine.

Just for the future, amazon.com has Bosch coil packs at about half the price that MB gets. And they are the same Bosch part number as in my CL600

Dang! Tell us more about this project. It appears to be a bit more involved than the average DIY engine swap. I see some seriously detailed fab work. Hats off to you if this is your work and your project!
