Engine shut down while car got over heated

Ok so I hope this isn't what I think it is. I was driving today and the temp was already high on the dash then some accident caused me to sit while cars were stopped. Temp reached 120 and right when I was able to finally stop I hear a pop and saw coolant leaking and the car shut down. I'm at work right now so I can't check it. It wasn't a lot of coolant maybe a liter or so.

I hope it's just a bad hose.

Something similar happened to my '93 190E 2.3 10 years ago. We were coming home and when I turned into the driveway I heard a pop and stopped before going into the garage. The short hose, water pump to thermostat housing split and coolant leaked out. I first thought is was just a bad hose. Upon further investigation, I found that there was oil in the coolant. The oil contaminated all of the coolant hoses. Yep, a bad head gasket. Removed the head the next day and saw the problem with the head gasket.
Installed new head gasket, along with having the head checked out at the machine shop, all new rubber hoses, and some other new parts. I also flushed the engine and heater core before putting in new coolant.

Still running good so far.

With luck you just busted a hose. Sounds like that to me.

If you heard the pop, I'd suspect a hose, radiator, or the coolant expansion bottle.

If you were at 120 at idle, it's time to do some cooling system maintenance as well.

I agree with Diseasel. I live in the same area as Ismalley. Yes, we have had 122F days but now it has cooled down to 112F! I've owned a 190, 124, E420, Cl500 and now my last a '97CL600. The 190 has the least cooling capacity but I've never had mine peg. Sounds to me like it is hose, thermostat, radiator, and possibly water pump time. The E420 and the CL's barely get above 90 even with the AC on and at a 15 minute idle. Sounds like you need some work done.

The plastic on the radiator busted open. I have replaced the radiator and now car runs amazing. No climbing temps.

Glad to hear that. Remember that we are driving cars that are 20-30 years old and things do fail. I had a cat converter fail on the road over to old Route 66 recently. 88 miles out from home and no cell coverage and little traffic. Some anxious times until a good Samaritan stopped and took me to a higher location where we got 1 "bar" and a AAA tow truck.

Great. I grew up in the '60's and no one drove twenty or thirty year old cars back then. Now look at us.
