i dont know what to do HELP?
 

i have a 190e 1985 2.3 liter and when i got the car it ran like crap so we worked on it. Found out the whole head was messed up, so we rebulit the whole head and check timing and alot of other stuff when we put the head back in and after head it was in. So we start it up and it is overheating,cuggin,black smoke is coming out of car, the battery drains very quickly, spark plugs turn black.
PLEASE HELP I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO :confused:

Black plugs, chugging (!), & black smoke suggest too much fuel...
Presumably you know what you are doing to be rebuilding this engine?! By the way if you're jump starting when the battery is flat it's very likely the fuse on the OVP relay (sigh) is blown, which causes at least hard starting and poor running.

Perhaps some more information would be useful?!

it sounds like something is not quite right with the head. Was it checked for cracks? How bout the timing. Did all the marks line up like they are supposed to?
You probably need to replace the alternator too.

yea timing fine and just got head rebuilt and all new parts in the head

Maybe the head was rebuilt, but was it checked for cracks??? This is not done automatically, but should be.
Jim's referring to cam timing, was it set correctly? Very critical. I'd pull the valve cover off and check it again, if the engine is not assembled correctly, it can come out of adjustment at startup. Was the head torqued correctly? What torque method did you use? I've also seen plugged pre-cats cause complaints like this (except the alternator problem), you may want to try running it with the front pipes loosened from the exhaust manifold and see if it runs better.

all timing is correct line up nice
when the pointer on the bottom is a tdc the timing mark on the cam line with the right top of head
igintion timing looks good with timing light
bottom of chain never removed

OK, so the head is still an unknown, I take it, as far as being checked for cracks and maybe even warpage. These engines are known to be neglected, and overheats are common, leading to head falures. Aside from that, it would also be fairly easy to just loosen the front pipes from the exhaust manifold to see if the pre-cats are plugged. We had one 2.3 in which the head gasket failure was ultimately traced to overheat caused by plugged pre-cats.
