What engine is this?

And will this really drop right into a 300E? ~Paul __________________ '91 300E, 212K miles |

Looks like the 24 valve - DOHC - M104
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. |

That engine is 104.981 DOHC valve 1990 to 1993 300SL only your 1986 300E has 103.983 SOHC 12 valve engine from 1986 to 1992 300E only.

Is '91 the first production year for the M104? I know the 300CE got it in '91 and apparently the 300sl as well. The 300E didn't get an M104 until '93 .... still wondering if this would drop right into a 300E without too much modifications.

I know that the US got it later than the rest of the world. I believe it was used in 300CE's (88?) in Europe.
