ASR parts compatibility with non ASR cars
 

So I know many of you are well versed in the electronics and options of the 124 with M104 engines! I stumbled into a messed up E320 and was able to repair the bad trans with stop leak which brought reverse gear back to life, and then I rebuilt the head and replaced about $1000 in parts restoring my 95 wagon to pretty good shape!

Water pump, radiator, fuel pumps and relays and heater fan-controller and so on. Got the AC going great..Then I smashed up in the ice and snow!

Still drives great and its back together but Im tempted to replace the car with one of the many very clean accident free cars I see from time to time needing a few parts.. (one on craiglist now in great shape with bad fuel pumps)

One of the most valuable parts in my E320 is a beautiful new dealer installed ETA (electric throttle) from 2009. And I know the cruise control and other engine functions depend on ETA function. To clarify, my car has ASR and it seems to work great.

If I replace my car with a non ASR model E320 can I assume it will NOT be compatible...especially with this ETA unit, and I know the wiring of these throttles is often bad. Ive seen several great cars under $2000 but they are all non-ASR models. Apparently the ASR cars were less common..

I did read through the tech section and no mention is made of the ETA type and replacement issues. Just a little section on removing and cleaning the throttle body.

You would need to replace a lot more parts if going from ASR to Non-ASR. These would include among other things:

1. Non-ASR Cruise Control / Idle Speed Control Module.

2. Throttle linkages.

3. ECM

4. ABS Module

could he just short out pins 1 and 6 on diagnostic connector under hood.

Pin 6 on a 16-pin OBD1 connector is the Airbag module. Pin 1 is ground.

Thanks Mercron, Yes. As I thought..I need an ASR car to use my nice OEM ETA on another vehicle, and they're far less common I find than the non-ASR type.

I'd just look for a non-ASR W124. It still has ABS. They're simpler to maintain and having that cable throttle connection means you won't have to worry about limp mode. You could sell your ASR ETA and get a non-ASR ETA as a spare for when you find that car.
