I just go with the max listed for summer tires on the fuel filler door.

My SDL shows 29/30PSI for summer tires on my '86 300SDL. I find 26/28 to be eyebrow-raisingly low.

Tires are different than when these cars were made.Back the 32 psi was max inflation. Now its 51 on most tires.I run Max as it was drilled into our heads by the govt. a way to save fuel.

The recommended tire pressures are there for a reason. Do your own experiments with tire pressures vs fuel economy. I'd imagine you won't see more than a 1-2mpg difference. Weigh that against how quickly you replace your tires vs how long they should have lasted and you'll quickly realize it wasn't worth it.

On a 2-ply passenger car tire, you'll notice. The center of the tread bulges and domes, causing a reduced amount of the tread to contact the road and accelerating wear to the tread in the center of the tread belt. Hitting irregularities such as expansion joints in bridges, potholes, pavement changes, and grooved pavement can cause damage to the sidewall, belt, or tread. The tire needs to have a certain amount of "give" to prevent damage from road irregularities and heat caused by friction and pavement temperatures. A 1991 vehicle came from the factory with radial tires. The recommended tire pressures are there for a reason. Running at the vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire pressure will result in the best compromise of ride, handling, and tire wear. To the OP: Open the fuel filler lid on your car. It should have a sticker in there showing you what Mercedes recommended for your car front and rear. It'll also have the recommended pressures for running alternate tires and load ratings.

It's on your fuel door. Tire pressure is fine at 32 psi all tbe way around.
