Oil level sensor
 

Guys and gals,

I am confused. I have driven my 99 e55 AMG for 5 yrs with just over 202k. Here are the things I am seeing.

When driving, I may see the following errors in no particular order....

1. Oil level sensor defective
2. Oil level low

When checking oil level, yes I have a dipstick so looks good.
When checking on console, after warming up to operating temp, then waiting 5-10 minutes for oil to drain into pan, I get ....observe waiting time, oil level above max....

???? Is does this alone confirm the malfunction or non-malfunction of my oil level sensor

Oil level sensors don't last forever. They have a float inside that has to move freely to give an accurate reading. Over time the float deteriorates and the float chamber gets filled with muck and varnish (the same stuff you're draining out during an oil change), and begins to bind up or gets stuck. As you drive around, the oil sloshes around in the pan, especially when going around turns or going up or down hills. If the float binds up, you'll get an error.

Change the sensor/sender at your next oil change. The pan has to be empty or you'll get covered with oil.

The sensor in lyle's M113 engine doesn't use a float, it's entirely electronic and has no moving parts. The sensor is capable of measuring temperature, level, and oil condition. They can give inaccurate readings if they get covered with sludge, or they can just simply fail electrically. I've seen both scenarios many times. It sounds to me like lyle's sensor is on it's way out............

FWIW, the sensor went away along with the M112/113 engines. MB went back to using the simple float-type sensor.
