300E manual trans fuel economy
Hey,
The 300E normally comes with an automatic 4-speed transmission and is rated to get 17 city/ 22 highway (according to carpoint.com, 1998 300E). In 1986, there was a manual transmission 5-speed available. Does anyone have any fuel economy numbers for that trans? Would it be safe to guess high 20's freeway, low 20's city? Thanks for any info... -m

That's about right. I got 27 on a tank that was mostly highway with a 200 lb passenger and AC on all the way.

The EPA is nuts. My 1986 300E 5-speed has nearly 200k on it. I still consistently get 23-25 MPG in mixed driving. 26-28 MPG for just highway. I've never even approached 18 MPG under the worst of conditions. I would not classify myself as a light-foot, either.

I can't remember ever getting anything as low as 18 MPG under ANY conditions.
My daily drive is 89 miles with about 20 miles of winding, narrow, paved farm to market road, 20 miles being freeway driving about 2 miles total through a small town with stop signs and traffic lights and the rest, wide two lane, hilly highway. I get from 25.5 to 27.5. I have very little boulevard stop light driving time to know, but I would be shocked if it fell below 20 under those conditions. All these numbers are with ME driving. Remember that driving style is a HUGE factor in fuel mileage. BTW. The manual transmission was also sent to the US in '88. There were about 700 '86's and about 300 '88's brought to the US. If you ever want bad fuel economy, buy a Rover Sterling 2.7 24valve, with the honda Engine. Quick as anything, but at about 20mpg on the motorway, its an expensive car to run.
Horrifying when you look at the instant MPG readout and it drops to 5-7 MPG on accelration!

I'm close
I have a M103 with a 5 speed, am I close enough to answer?
I get about 23 mpg with a 30 mile comute, 10 surface/20 freeway. And I've gotten my worst towing my utility trailer full of camping stuff: 17 mpg.
