New Key, $28 too much or just right?

Hi,

It's time to get a new key for the '94 E320. The current one has worn and is no longer reliable.

The local dealer (Caliber Motors) wants $28. Does anybody have a better source in Orange County, CA or is that the going rate?

Thanks,

I've heard others say they have gotten them for as low as $14.00 a key. unless you have the infrared remote key..

I plan on ordering a set of all new keys for my 1992 300CE.

How much and where does one get a replacement fob with the key and infrared remote?

emdee...

i've been down that road before.i had to go to a dealership, show proof of ownership, license and vin# and pay up front for the key(i can't remember exactly how much--but it wasn't cheap!)i was told the info is relayed to germany and they program the fob,cut the key and ship it back to the dealership.they say it's done in germany but something tells me it came from mid/north-east u.s.

Just went through this a couple months back for the 560. Utilized Walters in Riverside, all I needed was my registration and $28 per key. They ordered them from the factory, and had them on hand in 3 days. Perfectly cut and work great (even arm/disarm the alarm).

Is Walters in Riverside a dealership? Either way, you got a phone number for them?

Thanks ;)

Yes that is Walter's Mercedes-Benz ( and Porsche) Dealership in Riverside, CA. 1-800-WALTSMB, www.waltsmb.com is their website, for those interested.

Thanks.

I just got off the phone with Fletcher Jones in Newport Beach. Keys are $18. Same deal, you show proof of ownership and they have your key in 3 days.

Seems like the best deal so far...

$18 for a key is a good deal.

BTW, the reason the dealers don't cut them anymore is a: the cutting machines for the 3D keyes are very expensive and b: the liability is removed to the local region parts centers.

Just had one cut the other day for $20 ... received the next day. He said parts are always fed-ex'ed in and they aren't charged for the shipping.

They are cut in Baltimore he told me.

My NJ Dealer quoted $50

I have a 1977 300D, obviously a low tech key. They quoted that price with a straight face. I called MB USA and they will give you a list of locksmiths that are authorized to cut MB keys who will do it at a much lower cost.

I got the $50 quote beat !

MB in san francisco just quoted me $65. If that is not gouging, I don't know what is. I am going to have my wife do it in switzerland in september.

These dealers are just too much.

hey jcd
can you post the authorized key cutters?
