the phone call nobody wants to get...
Guys - I just brought my wife's 2011 Audi A4 wagon in for oil change and check out a light on the dash - the EPC warning light. Engine power control - light. About 2 hours later I get the call from the shop and they say there is a ton of metal in your oil pan - the engine is blown causing the EPC light to come on.
It only has 165,000 miles on it and I had the piston and ring job done on it due to massive oil consumption about 45,000 miles ago. I hate Audis - always did  if it was my car I would replace it with another $2500 W124 diesel but since it's my wife's car............................$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ |
Wow a 2.0T vag engine lasted 165k miles? That's got to be a new record. Are they sending you a mileage badge?

Audi and VW. The most poorly designed piss-poor example of German engineering. It's either an electrical issue, or a blown engine. Should have kept your W210 diesel.

Hate to agree but is true. I know a guy who has collected 5 Audis. They are all parked in the back yard on the lawn. No worko. |
But we don't know the history of this car. Synthetic oil changed on time/ car driven foot to floor from every stop?
Small motor, turbo, run hard = it will fail. Does anyone know how the non turbo engines hold up? |
It was the wife's car. She is pretty easy on cars. We bought it with 20,000 on it had warranty to 100,000 which covered the piston job thankfully.
She's gonna want an E350 wagon and tomorrow is her birthday. I lose. Lots of 2014 wagons in the CPO section of MB dealers online. That is few years after face light right? Any issues with those? |
She will like the wagon a lot. The lovely Ms engatwork took over driving the 05 E320 wagon with 285k miles on it a couple of months ago and I got stuck with the 98 E300:). She wanted something built within the last decade so we did get pretty close with the wagon.

Not saying you don't have problems, but based on what you said the diagnosis doesn't make sense. EPC means a problem with the engine speed sensor, MAF or throttle body, none of which can plausibly be triggered by metal in the oil pan. Ultimately, your engine is only trashed if has lost oil pressure or compression which should give you oil pressure warnings or misfires. If it is drive-able, I would take it somewhere for a 2nd opinion.
