I was notified by the Benz dealership today that the gas leak I discovered is due to a faulty fuel pump. I have not heard much about fuelp pumps on 300E's going bad, so this was a bit of a new problem to me. Does this sound right or are they ripping me off? I told the service advisor that I was under the impression that when a fuel pump dies you simply can't drive or start your car for more than a second, but he assured me that seals and "internal parts" break down and cause it to leak. It will cost $275 to fix. Does any of this seem odd?

Usually it's the copper seals around the fittings of the fuel pump(s) that are at fault. I have seen very rarely where the large o-ring that seals the pump casing does infact leak. In this case you do have to install a new pump...Bottom line, you have to trust their judgement or get a second opinion.
