Hi all,

I could use some W123 help. My recently acquired 1984 300D, my sixth W123, needs both rear CV shafts and I'm having the damndest time finding the right replacement parts.

Hearing all sorts of things re different parts numbers/types/availability and none of them are good - some are saying the parts are VIN-specific, some say these shafts are common and have gone into dozens of models - almost everyone says they can't get them. Homokinetic or not/MB conversion kit or not etc etc etc...only thing everyone agrees on is the left and right are identical/interchangeable so you don't have to buy them separately.

that the local dealer say should fit this car - of course, they're $850 each from the factory. I'm okay with going aftermarket/reman provided they're the right fit.

As a practical matter there are two types of shafts of the correct length:
1) Homokinetic, with large cans covering the joints on both ends, and non-detachable splined stub shafts on both ends.
2) Annular/"Lobro", with an inner joint that is attached to the inboard stub shaft by six bolts. When the axle shaft is removed from the car the inboard stub shaft remains in the center section (differential).

In the homokinetic type all shafts from 107 (six-cylinder), 114/115, and 123 chassis will interchange.
The "Lobro" type shafts (of the correct length) are unique to some late 123s.
