Speedometer cable lube

I have the speedometer out of my car and the cable is just sitting there. I thought now would be a good time to do some preventive maintenance and refresh the lube after 22 years service.

What is the specified lube for the cable? I don't see it in the approved products list. Searching on this site and others yields a plethora of suggestions, including graphite lube, wheel bearing grease, and others. In the old days for other makes it was stated to only use a graphite lube.

ATF is the recommended lube.

This is from an actual speedometer repair guy:

Do not use graphite, it will cause more damage than good. (Graphite is good for the speedometer repair guys like me) Sewing machine oil or mineral oil will work, I use Liquid Bearings, you can get it on eBay or Amazon. Hope this helps. White lithium is best for cables.

I actually queried my speedometer guy. He said just grease it. Remove the cable... clean it... then coat it with grease, avoiding the last six inches near the speedometer or so.

I see with my model, cable removal must be done from underneath the car.

Any oil is better than no oil .. Just put a light engine oil in mine . 4 years back ..They are nylon lined, so they should last for ever .
