What is normal quantity of oil left in filter housing?

400E is my first V-8 Mercedes. Have only changed oil once before and doing again this weekend. I like the fact that it does not have twist-on filter but instead has oil filter housing with replaceable filter element like the OM616s and 617s of the W123s. However, it is at an angle and during first change I noticed a substantial quanity of oil in housing after removing filter (1 pint approx.) and I sucked it out before replacing filter.

Is this normal? What is pro-wrench procedure if this is normal with regard to removal or just leaving this oil?

All help appreciated.

There was a thread on this in the last 6 months or so -- do a search. It was a 400E owner with the same problem. I don't remember the fix.

On mine, there is maybe a tablespoon or two of oil left in the filter housing -- that's normal. I suck it out with my Topsider.

Thanks for your response. I did a search under M119 oil filter and found it (had done using 400e instead before). Unfortunately, although the poster seemed to have same issue as me, it does not appear that it was ever resolved. It seems that after loosening filter top, that all the oil should drain.

Anyone out there with insight?

You're right -- same question, but no resolution. That explains why I didn't remember what the fix was!

Good luck; hope someone has an idea what, if anything, needs to be done.
