I can't believe this. Did I just kill my transmission?
2000 E320
I had over 2 years of trouble free service from this car, and in one day it's trashed. See my other post regarding a bad ground effecting my lights and engine quitting. It turns out that the turn signal cuts the engine out too. I was coming to an intersection to make a turn, put the signal on and it cut the engine. I had traffic right behind me and I panicked a bit and threw it in park to get it started again. Turns out I was still rolling , maybe 2 mph or so. Now I can't move the shifter out of park. It won't budge. Any thoughts on this? |

Trans is probably fine, just linkage/cable is bound up. There should be a button that can be depressed by using a small screwdriver or similar tool in the black plastic around the shifter gate area to release it. Check your owners manual, there may be a picture for the exact location.

Most automatics have some sort of ratchet mechanism to prevent teeth stripping off gears if the transmission is accidentally thrown into park while the vehicle is moving. Barely rolling should hardly phase it. As mentioned above, the shifter may be bound up.

Don't worry it didn't damage the transmission, its made to rachet off the mechanism of trans if your rolling and throw it into park, you cant kill the trans , but need to check out linkege

I don't think that the 2000 E320 has transmission unlock button under the shifter plate. My 1999 Turbo D got locked up and I hunted for that thing for hours with no luck.
finally a guy had to come get under the car to try and manually move the shifter linkage - that didn't work either so we dragged it down the drive way with wheels all locked up to the tow truck and off to the crusher.

The 2000 model year W210 has the manual hold +/- shifter.
right under the D position is a U shaped spring loaded cover which will open if you push it with a pen or a stick. Once the lock is pressed the shifter can be moved out and into P without any electrics in the car. If all has failed, jack the car up and unclip the shift rod from the lever assembly and move the manual valve by hand. Its not like the 8spd zf auto which has an electric motor to move the valve.

The main grounds are in the engine room, under the seat, on the floor and behind the gauge cluster. - Easy to identify as MB use brown as ground.
