W210 key fob woes
Hey folks! I am checking to see if I can repair my one and only key fob. When I bought my 2001 e320 at auction it had just one fob taped together, was missing the lock button and the flat metal key! Greeaat peter.
I purchased one of those cheap aftermarket fob housings off of flea bay and put it all together with new batteries. Oh what a perty fob I have now! I still do not have a cut metal key for my car but thought I would get to that later. Here is my problem.... Car starts perfect. Key fob will unlock the doors and pop the trunk. However the lock button does nothing. Crap! So since I have NO cut metal flat key for my car AND the lock button does not work.....how the hell do I lock my car??? I pulled the fob back apart and looked at the circuit board and noticed the tiny round black buttons on the board. You know they do the “clicking” and make things happen when the fob is together. Under close inspection the little tiny black button on the circuit board for the locking function is gone! I see it’s little foundation where it once resided and it’s not there. Crap. The others for unlock, trunk and panic are there and function as they should. Question....can I repair this? Has anyone had any experience with working on these circuit boards? I guess it fell out during the POs tenure with the car since that original fob had fallen apart and the outer lock button was missing. I have this car going to my daughter in a few weeks and could use a little advice. Thanks in advanced sorry for the long a$# description. Joe |
Do all doors lock if you press the driver door golf tee through an open left rear door? I had to do this on occasion when my '83 SD driver door wouldn't let the key turn to lock.

Buy another key at the dealer, and while you are testing, leave a window down. I foresee the car locking then not being able to unlock it.

Thx sixto! I will try that. The car is 40 miles away from me at the moment to try it but will your 98 e320 do it? Thx. Joe

^been there, done that seen that chit. As already stated, drive car and take registration to dlr and get a new key. I did that on mine not too long ago and I'll be durn if the new key is not as reliable as the old one.

Ok guys thx. Any idea of the cost? I mean the car cost me like 700 bucks

I want to say around $150 IIRC.

The dealer will give you the newer style chrome key with the red triangle panic button. Your coworkers will all see it and think you bought a new car, lol. For the w210 models, they do not need to keep the car - they only need to read the VIN number from it, and get a copy of your drivers license and registration (to make sure you didnt steal the car) to place the order for the new key. The key will take 3 or 4 days to come in, and then you go pick it up. |

My standard MO is to buy a $ 500 / 130,000 mile car with a bad trans / engine but decent body then do a major recondition ( like $ 3,000 + in parts ), end up with what is basically a 35,000 mile car then get another 150,000 miles out of it. Original purchase price means nothing, if the car was on last legs and had previously served you well, I'd see balking at the cost of a key. |
