722.6 fluid?

I've asked this question before and never got an answer from someone who knows these transmissions. they are a 98 and 2000 e and ml 320s with 200,000 and no issues. Fuch has a newer 4134 fluid designed around the newer 7 speed which is just a hair thinner than the older 3353 designed for the 5 speed. these are 20 year old trans and I wondering if the 3353 is a better match than the newer 4134

If the new stuff is better for the 722.6, MB will probably only stock the new stuff so check what's available from the dealer.

This might help - http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w203-c-class/2324825-atf-134-atf-3353-a.html

the new stuff is ATF 134 by shell. You can buy a case of it from a shell oil distributor in your town. call and ask them.

I also use ATF +4 in these and they have worked perfect (not advising you to do that - but these same transmissions are used in a lot of chrysler cars and take ATF +4

Anyone up for a little conspiracy theory?

OLDMAN said the new ATF for the 7-speed is a hair thinner than the older 5-speed stuff.
GM did the same thing about 10 years ago, obsoleting DEX III and replacing with a slightly thinner DEX IV.

Hmmmm; maybe all the world's ATF is made in one plant in a mountain chalet in northern Siberia? Then appropriately doped with 2 drops of each brand's "magic additive", bottled appropriately, and shipped to all the automotive companies in the world?

They do it with gasoline, why not oil?

Yeah, just tongue-in-cheek, but............

Cheers,
DG

Dex VI is partially if not fully synthetic vs Dex III so it’s more than just thinned. I wonder if it’s safe to extend the drain interval of Dex VI in a Dex III application.

the finer details aside. The physical properties of GM Dex VI and MB 134 are pretty similar.

I changed out my 722.6 transmission with MaxLife. it's a 97 s320. Made the change at 118k... now has 158k on the clock. Probably should drain it again soon....

722.6's are still being used in some cars. The fill in the factory is the latest 236.14.

236.14 is backwards compatible to the 722.6. Old 722.6 fluids are not forward compatible with the newer 722.9.

722.6 fluids and filters must be changed every 40,000 miles or 60,000 kilometers

If you go to a dealership and ask them for 722.6 fluid they will supply 236.14
