help: W124 400E high idle (1000-1200 rpm)

After transmission swap and installing new lower wire harness the engine idles is idling at 1000 -1200 with hot engine. This is not good.

Vacuum is fine with 20" Hg at idle.

What is involved for idle control? Does someone have a diagram what to look for?

Best, Martin

Give a look see at your throttle and transmission linkages at the connection on the motor.

Do you mean the short connection rod (short rod with ball joints) from gas pedal to the ETA down at the intake/ throttle?

yes I had to disconnect this one during transmission swap. I could have adjusted that incorrectly... so it won't 'click' to the end stop at the ETA.
I'll check.

What I noticed: Idle is at 1000rpm at cold start...and idle drops to 700rpm with warm engine at 40-60 Celsius and it goes up to 1000-1200 when hot.

I adjusted the small vertical rod at throttle linkage at the fire wall/back of engine. I heard the ETA click before but by closer inspection there was still a tiny gap between lever and end stop.
So I slackened the rod a bit and voila ... idle dropped from 1000 to 700... case is solved. ETA lever needs to touch the end stop and idle!

Thanks for your help.

That end stop at the ETA (box down at the intake manifold next to the throttle)
seems to trigger the lower revs ...but only with the hot engine.

Before end stop was adjusted correctly A) the cold start idle was 'normal' at 1000 rpm ...then dropped with B) warming up engine (dropped to 700) and then C) idle was rising to 1200 with hot engine...
Now with the lever touching the end stop A) and B) are similar but C) changed to 650 rpm

650 rpm is a correct idle speed
