Grey Market VIN decoder
 

I need help in locating a VIN Decoder for a 1979 450 SLC 5.0 euro. Trying to figure out if it is a rare rally car. Has all euro bumpers, headlights, speedo, and center console is all german, radio is german, and it came with factory installed AC. Velour interior, fire extinguisher and it has the lower side moldings that are dark grey and not color matched to the car. These are all the signs of the rare '79 5.0's. Would really appreciate help in figuring this car out.

Anyone with access to EPC can run the VIN for the data card which lists the option codes. IIRC the VIN should begin with 107026 for a 5.0 vs 107024 for a ‘common’ 450SLC.

I doubt it’s a factory prepped rally car if it has AC. Aren’t the box and trunk lid supposedly aluminum on real 5.0s? Or many they’re all aluminum. A magnet can confirm that.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to track down someone with access to EPC. The VIN is #10702612000776. Hood, trunk and block is aluminum. I read that only the euro cars came loaded with things like AC, supposedly none of the 'common' 450SLC's came with that. It seems like this is one of only about 200 left.

Yes, you’ll need a global access version of EPC for a non-US car.

The VIN is correct for the cars that were produced to conform with FIA homologation requirements as to minimum number made to be eligible for rally competition.
As noted above, 107026 = SLC w/5L M117.960.
12 = LHD w/auto transmission (if the original trans is installed it would be a 722.006).
000776 = serial #.

Only a very few of the group were actually destined for competition, however the FIA required that something on the order of a minimum of 500 be constructed (and offered for sale to the public) to establish eligibility.

provided i can find someone with the global EPC will give the original equipment that came with the car?
