If I perform my own first oil change at about 5k miles, will the service indicator still remind me to have the vehicle serviced at about 10k miles or will sensors detect that I've done something and delay the reminder until about 15k? I'm hoping that I'll be able to perform all my own in-between oil changes and still have the service reminder alert me to the normal factory scheduled services.

The system works by analyzing the oil and your driving habits. When it detects the oil is suddenly much cleaner (oil change) it will delay the oil change service light accordingly. If you are very concerned or plan on keeping the car "till the wheels fall off" you may want to stick to a more conventional schedule of maintenance. Brake pads, various fluids, and other assorted parts still need to be inspected/replaced (as needed).

Hope this helps...Lee

Mercedes designed the "flexible-service" system so that the owner can reset the svc. mileage back to 10k miles after the oil has been changed. Read the owners book to see how. The mileage light will come on when the oil quality sensor deems the oil is "done".

My understanding is that if the light isn't on by 10,000 it will come on at 10,000.

The 10k number is the minimun mileage that the car will go before the light can come on. The maximun can go as high as 20k, but most cars go 12-14k. It really is flexible!! But what will the engine look like after 120k miles??

Thanks Doc. That's what we're here for!!!
