This DARN Vibration!
[1993 190e 2.6, 73k]
Hello Friends. I'm hoping that you can help me with my continued struggle at solving a vibration problem while driving. When I approach speeds of 65-70mph, I get this strong vibration in the driver's seat, the accelerator pedal and the steering wheel. The vibration is not noticable below 60mph. The wheel will not vibrate all of the time, but it's quite noticable when it does. The driver's seat and accelerator pedal vibrate ALL of the time at these speeds. I feel like I'm having a seizure while I'm driving! I had my car to the shop a week and a half ago, and the mechanic noticed excessive play in the steering wheel. After inspecting the suspension, he determined that the wheel bearings and idler arm needed to be replaced. He did that for me and did a wheel alignment, and I was hoping that would take care of the vibration. Unfortunately, it did not help at all. A few weeks before that, I had front brakes and rotors done. I think I'm gonna have to go back and have them adjusted or something. When I firmly apply the brakes at 40-45mph, there is that "bad rotor" sound -- excess vibration, etc. Here's my main question: Could these brake pads and rotors be the culprite of this vibration problem? I didn't seem to have any problems before I had the brakes done. It appeared since the brake job. If not the pads/rotors, then what could be causing this horrible vibrating? It's driving me NUTS! As always, I would be grateful for your comments and feedback. Thanks again everyone, Michael. |

Your problem sounds somewhat similar to the problem I experienced.
Warped rotors can be a source of wheel vibration. A lot of things can cause wheel vibration, as well. You may have bad tires. Your tires may be improperly balanced. You may have a worn out suspension component, like I ultimately had (worn out tie tod end). I would recommend getting your tires balanced first by a Hunter GPS9700 balance machine. The website is located on the thread posted below. Check it out. I think somewhere on page 2 is listed the many possible sources of wheel vibration: Bad tires or bad wheel balance

I one struggled with a vibration problem on my Corvette a few years ago.
The problem was caused by a out of balance brake rotor. (Cheap jobber parts). I replaced the rotors with OE, and the problem was solved. Good luck JackD |

bent wheels, bad tires, steering dampers, and warped hubs or rusty hubs can cause this, what happens if you rotate the tires? I remeber seeing Rabbits and 944's vibrate with bad strut inserts as well (shocks) but this dosent seem the be a problem with the Benz product.
btw, the rusty hubs will throw the rotor face off as will a warped hub which is also accompanied by brake vibration. Joe

I am really tending to think that this problem is caused by the brake pads/rotors. Before I took it in to have the brakes done, the car was fine -- it had no vibration whatsoever. It started up right after I had the new pads and rotors. I'm tending to think that it is not suspension-related as the mechanic thoroughly checked my suspension and found no problems other than the wheel bearing & idler arm which were replaced. The tires are worn -- I'll need a new set of them pretty soon. But before the brake job, there was no vibration at all. The tires are wearing fine. I checked them and they all look fine.
I'm guessing that because I'm still getting vibration in the brake pedal with new pads/rotors that something is probably off kelter. I'm going to take it in on Monday and see what they have to say about it, and will post the results. Last edited by mradowic; 05-11-2002 at 10:23 AM. |
