300TE Squeal/Fuel smell...........
This morning my 93 300TE started to smell like fuel inside the cabin, and at the same time something under the hood is squealing...
Currently at my office, and it's pouring rain. Not in the mood to get soaked at the moment. Is there anything that could have caused these two symptoms to happen at the same time, or most likely a coincidence? |

The fuel smell is probably caused by the electro-hydraulic actuator (EHA). It's a black rectangular module mounted on the back side of the fuel distributor. Check for wetness underneath it.
With it pouring this morn, your serpentine belt might have gotten wet and perhaps your tensioner is failing so the belt does not have the proper tension. |

Where is the fuel distributor located at? Thank you |

Does your 300TE have the single cam M103 or the twin cam M104 engine?
My comments about the EHA are only valid for the M103 (Edit: and early 104's used in the coupes). If it is the M103, the fuel distributor is under the air cleaner with all the injection lines coming out of it. Last edited by Rick76; 01-12-2018 at 02:32 PM. |

Shawnb, your 1993 300TE with the 104 engine has an Electro Hydraulic Actuator (EHA) valve. Remove the air cleaner housing and you will see it. Typically as the EHA's age they develop a hairline crack in the black plastic body and leak gasoline which produces the strong gas odor. Best to examine for an EHA valve leak immediately after starting a cold engine because with a hot engine any leaking gas will evaporate quickly. If that is the problem replace the EHA valve ASAP, before you experience an under-hood fire.
As for the squealing, check the drive belt tension. If the drive belt is tight it's possible the fan bearing bracket is failing and needs to be replaced. Check for a wobble in the fan and metal chips in the vicinity of the fan bearing bracket. MB dealers sell reconditioned fan bearing brackets with the old one returned to them to avoid paying a core charge.

Is it a 4Matic? Otherwise a ‘93 TE should have HFM, not CIS.

sixto, the online parts website I checked shows that a 1993 300TE engine has an EHA. That was the basis for my previous post because I have no direct experience with that particular vehicle/engine combination.

I’m guessing the site doesn’t distinguish parts for a 300TE (M104 HFM) and 300TE 4Matic (M103 CIS). To my knowledge only the 4Matic has an EHA.

sixto, actually the website does list the two models, and shows that both engines have an EHA valve. The engine listed for a 1993 300TE is a 104.992. I know that our 1991 300CE with a 104.980 engine has an EHA valve because I have replaced it.

The M104 from ‘90 to ‘92 has CIS with an oval air cleaner over the fuel distributor on the port side. The HFM M104 has a rectangular air cleaner on the starboard side. I don’t know that a ‘93 TE with HFM doesn’t have a EHA but I don’t see the purpose on an electronically controlled system. http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/rmillerphd/2008-10-17_175159_aFinal1.pdf
Check the parts catalog of the site sponsor. If you select 300TE 4Matic, you’ll see EHA parts. Actually E.H.A. parts. If you select 300TE not 4Matic, EHA parts aren’t listed. M104 CIS - M104 HFM - Sixto 98 E320s sedan and wagon |
