1 Qt or 2?

Something has been bothering me for years since we bought the 2003 E320. The fact that it has no dipstick. What if the computer is wrong, or the oil level sensor fails?

Yesterday I changed the oil myself and measured the old oil in several empty quart bottles that I've been saving just for this project.

The E300 and the S420 both had dipsticks and if I remember correctly the low mark was 2 quarts, not 1.

I have let the computer in the E320 tell me if the oil level is low but always displays, "Oil Level OK." Personally, I want to see the dipstick.

When I drained the old oil yesterday I got out 7.5 quarts. The Mercedes book says the capacity is 8.5 quarts.

Shouldn't have the computer told me I was 1 quart low?

Or is the low mark in the E320 computer at 2 quarts like the old dipsticks marks were?

You can get a workshop engine oil dipstick,( Not the trans one, it is different ) that would be the best bet.

looks like their building cars to blow up engines,so you will buy another.

It might take 8.5 quarts to fill a new transmission, torque converter and cooler but you won’t get it all out in your garage.

Does your torque converter have a drain? I thought there’s no drain from MY 2000.

x2 - get a shop dipstick to be sure.

Also on the E , there should be a way to get a numeric engine oil level on the dash by pushing a few buttons. ( I don't know how ) Someone did this in another thread and proceeded to drive them selves crazy over a variation of a few tenths of a qt.

I called the dealer

I called the Mercedes in Lafayette La. to see if they could answer my question about "What's is the low oil mark on the E320 without a dipstick?"

When will the computer tell me the oil is low, 1 quart or 2?

The service man said the computer will not tell me the oil is low until the oil level in the engine is 2.1 quarts low.

Just in case someone else was thinking about the same issue, now we know.

Either he doesn't know what he's talking about or he's messing with you. If it tells you to add a quart..........then add a quart, don't overthink it. Re-read the earlier post about the guy who was going nuts over a few tenth's of a quart :)
