w124 M103 fitting auto box oil cooler .

I need to do this job .My car is a few years old now .The radiator is fine with no leaks .But i read from time to time that the coolant pipes that go through the radiator can leak .And in doing so coolant gets in to the auto box to damage it .
So its a good idea to fix in there a new oil cooler .
Question is , is there any one on the forum thats done this mod .
If so could they please give some guidance .May be a picture of finished install. And what parts were used .

Where are you going to mount it? The space in front of the condenser is taken up by aux fans. Some Euro spec W124s with a trailer hitch had a factory trans cooler mounted in front of the passenger side front tires.

I'm betting it would be cheaper and easier in the long run to just slap a new radiator in it every 30 years. Also, the trans cooler does double duty, it not only cools the trans, but being a water/oil exchanger, it also helps to keep the trans at the proper temp in cold weather. Unless you are pulling a heavy trailer or hauling moonshine up the mountainside (and everybody knows you haul moonshine DOWN the mountain), there is no call for an additional cooler. The weak Mercedes trans will give it up before it overheats.

IIRC, this was a problem on 211's with Valeo radiators. I haven't heard of it on earlier cars.

being in UK, you can probably find the factory ATF cooler for a W124 in a scrapyard as you guys had a lot of estate models with that cooler as factory install.

The only good usable spot is in front of the right side tire, but you will also need a plastic part that is the inner mudshield extender that protects the cooler from getting plugged with road mud from the tire.

If you find a very slim cooler and you dont have factory AC in your car you can install it easily in front of the radiator

I don't think any w124 sold in the US got the external transmission cooler, not even the wagons.
